IDEA Cellular is part of the Aditya Birla Group, the group operates in 25 countries. IDEA Cellular Ltd. is a leading GSM mobile services operator with over 47 million subscribers, under brand IDEA. It has licenses and spectrum to operate in all 22 service areas of India, with commercial operations in 18 service areas. IDEA is in 5th spot as per TRAI records.
In an interview Mr. Sanjeev Aga, Managing Director, IDEA Cellular said, "Chennai is a strategic market for IDEA, and we are happy to launch our services in this metro city. This not only provides us a platform to further strengthen our market position in the South, but is also a key milestone in our national roll-out plan."

IDEA will develop customer service with a robust retail network comprising of exclusive 'My Idea Stores', 'Idea Points' and other outlets. The service network will be expanded to over 25,000 retail outlets and 60 IDEA showrooms in the state, shortly. Aimed at achieving visibility and real time experience, these will significantly enhance IDEA's distribution network and help reach out to its discerning customers across all segments.

But what is the reality here in Chennai…. Is that idea telecom launched their service strong enough to challenge their competitors……
The fact is……… IDEA will die within year……. May be before June it may happen…….
Why?????? Lot of unanswered questions eating my head…… is the company is not capable to challenge the Chennai market….. It has all well build base but still lacking. Poor planning is going to collapse IDEA…..
Problems in IDEA:
Customers:
The customer are enjoying the current scenario…… company failed to identify the customers touch point…..
Customer are getting the sim cards from different service provider at free of cost and it holds minimum 15 to maximum 80 rupees of talk time…… with life time validity too.
So it is difficult for new entries to switch over to another operator. Customer have a constant operator and use the other operator only to make call.
If the network have poor coverage the customers won’t use the operator at free of cost also.
Competitors:

MNC’s ……..telecom giant are going to launch their service. By next year Tamilnadu is going to have 15 operators.
The middle man:
Distributor are the big problem of IDEA…I mean the distributor are not creating the problem. The company itself became as big headache for the distributors.
Distributor role is important in this industry. IDEA provides 1.5% margin in total sale for the distributors at the same time other operator margin is pretty high. And they provide copier, scanner machines and digital camera to reduce the burden of distributor and retailers. But IDEA still follow all traditional procedures.
Past 3 months every Chennai distributor had lost between 15000 to 25000 rupees.
Actually IDEA asked the distributors to appoint 3 sale people for the promotional activities but it is difficult for the distributor to give salary while they are not generating any profit.
Distributor are forced by the sales team to move the product in the market to achieve the target and that leads the distributors to provide dummy identity proof for the numbers. And the company never mind receiving same identity proof for more then one numbers. It is called “scratching” in sales team’s language.
And every number is considered as active number. And the IDEA manage to make forecasting based on this performance.
Threat from TRAI:
TRAI has announced that all the operator must have pulse rate billing system. And it is going to be implemented in a short period.
Company policies:
IDEA doesn’t have a fixed planning and they change their policies in an irregular intervels.
Advertising:
IDEA has a great great great advertising team they never know what to do for advertisement. IDEA has actress Shereya as a brand ambassador for south India…… you can find poster in Chennai. First I thought it is poster of “kungumam” magazine.
No TV AD’s……I think the commercial shooting is on process…… Even paan beda valla try to showcase himself great for his new shop….then what is the job of the IDEA creative team……

Know its hard to digest, yet its my opinion dude.
IDEA will soon hit the market with the bang. As you said IDEA provides same margin for distributors as Airtel and others provide. Only DOCOMO stands top in providing more margin. Virgin mobile offers 2% to distributors.
Also sales people work for distributors but the pay is going to be from the company. I am partnered with a Mobile retail outlet and may be that’s the reason I can give these insights.
Providing copiers, digital cameras etc is the new strategy from Aircel which is just copied by IDEA too. But I feel it has a very good growth.
Providing dummy identity proof happens with every network, For example, DOCOMO received more than 5 lakh dummy proofs after few months of their launch.
Also I like to inform you that IDEA has not well established themselves. Yet they are under development. They still recruit people to take care of this market. And giving free SIM connection initially became a fashion nowadays for all brands to boost up sales. Even IDEA does it.
You cant decide there is no lion in the jungle by the silence. Wait to watch the show.
Now tell me which brand offers you full talktime for all my recharges. Recharge for Rs.50 get Rs.50. Isn't it new? Also IDEA offers very less call rates compared to all other networks when it comes to STD or whatever.
All north Indians who present in my place are asking for IDEA even if i offer some other connection.
Their major brand strengths are Generic name they possess, brand color and brand promise.
Everyone look IDEA has gone down just because they launched in the recession with global brand DOCOMO.
Compared to all other brands in the present market, IDEA is the youngest. So I feel it has a good growth.
But hats off to your post on IDEA. Actually i was planning to write a post on DOCOMO. Now you triggered me to do so.
Yes I can digest some of your opinions…..but some of the fact that you have to digest……
It is happy to see IDEA started up…. Coming with some touch point stores across Tamilnadu….. But the process is really slow……
While racing with rabbit you can’t to be tortoise…..because already lot of tiger’s waiting for you….
One shocking fact is IDEA distributors have to appoint sales people and they have to give salary from the profit margin….it comes around 20k…. That’s what I mentioned in my post….
And about dummy identity proof operator can’t satisfy by saying DOCOMO received more than 5 lakh dummy proofs…. They have to plan to reduce these kind of lose……
All mobile operators may not give regular recharge but they provide special offers regularly…
Some example are:
Pay 62 and get 82 from Airtel…..
Pay 18 and change your plan in Aircel – one paisa for one second….
Pay 50 and get 50 – free roaming…..
All north Indian may ask for IDEA because it has established well in north…. Aircel now in north… in short period north Indian will ask for Aircel…
All those golden days are gone… all the customers are not easily diluted….

Hare yaar cool... You are not understanding the main scenario with chennai telecom market. Here there is no 2 or 3 players in the ground trying to make more subscribers. Rather players have become more. So you can never see anyone getting huge volumes of customers. If say 1,00,000 number then , each one can get more orless equal share but difference between them will be negligible... No network can mint money through voice , everyone are moving to VAS to make money. Wait and see how IDEA is going to play in that space. So even tom a new operator comes in to play, never expect them to make more numbers. Even they will grow slowly. Because our telecom market is moving to saturation level.. I always salute new brands who come up with new strategies which is making the old ones search their shoes to stick in. For example, As you know per second pulse has been launched by DOCOMO but implemented by MTS,VIRGIN,AIRCEL and now AIRTEL also marching towards it. So we cant say DOCOMO is no.1 and all others are not doing well. Dont fix up your mind with distributors alone and move on to conclusion... Look at the other charactersitics too. Aircel always relies on seasonal growth. Just go through their balance sheet once.
Yes i do agree when it comes to play, new ones should face old ones but with their own strategy. Ther strategy will hit the spaces soon.
Who cares for throwing a primary SIM and getting a new one. Noone wish to. TRAI esearch itself said "consumers started owing more than 1 SIM connection". SO now cant expect apple to be eaten only by the old ones. Everything including profits got shared... So try to make your next post on VAS which is value added services and on 3G. Start googling will feel the WOW factor.
